Meet Gillian Powers, Acupuncturist

Gillian Powers, M.Ac., L.Ac., earned her Master of Acupuncture degree from the TAI Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland in 2004. Through her own struggles with infertility, she began to specialize in women’s health, male and female fertility, and maternity care. Gillian creates a treatment program specific to each individual – whether they are just preparing to start a family, or are presently undergoing an IVF cycle.

Acupuncture

Chinese Medicine is one of the oldest continuously practiced medical systems in the world and is used by 60 percent of the world’s population as primary health care. Its first medical texts are more than 2200 years old. Unlike allopathic medicine, Chinese Medicine has a 1000 year history of treating women’s health and gynecology. Studies have shown that acupuncture increases endorphin output – which may account for the relaxation patients experience – but clearly there are other therapeutic mechanisms at work, not yet well understood by modern science. Acupuncture is safe, effective and drug-free – a perfect therapy used on its own or in conjunction with ARTs.

Fertility

Infertility affects 1 in 8 couples, and can be attributed to 30% male factor, 30% female factor and 20% combination or unknown cause. There is a spectrum of infertility treatment interventions from gentlest/least invasive/self-regulating to most invasive/most medicated. I recommend you make use of the gentlest interventions even if you’re already using ICSI – it can only improve your chances of success! Lifestyle changes and food choices based on optimizing your fertility are useful whether trying to conceive in your bedroom or the clinic.
